Physiotherapy is a science based health care profession, using the movements of the human body to judge the well-being of individuals. Physios assess the entire human body, its movements and restrictions, before diagnosing a problem or injury. They then manipulate the body to work and move correctly, to strengthen the weaker areas that cause injury or pain to the patient.
A variety of techniques are used to determine problems. Treatments consist of: manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, massage, movement analysis and ultrasound.
Physiotherapists view each case individually and take psychological, cultural and social factors into consideration. These factors can often determine how the individual can help themselves, whilst receiving support, advice and treatment from the therapist. Physios also design home-based exercise programmes so the patient can improve their own symptoms and posture in between appointments.
Physiotherapy does not just involve curing the pain. It is important to find the underlying cause of the problem to prevent reoccurrence.
