Manipulative Physiotherapy
Manipulative physiotherapy involves the precise
assessment of musculoskeletal ailments. Careful history
taking, during the subjective examination should allow the therapist
to organise their thoughts and ideas ("working hypothesis").
This rigorous process should allow the therapist to optimise the
physical examination.
During the physical examination the therapist confirms or negates
their "working hypothesis" in order to ascertain which structures
are involved in the dis-function. Such a process allows
the instigation of efficacious time effective treatment regimes.
Treatment techniques vary but should be directed by clinical reasoning
to the normalisation of signs and symptoms.

Gait Analysis
This is the measuring and analysis of the body's
bio mechanics. (Your feet and legs as you walk or run on a treadmill)
The physiotherapist is able to video your movements,
enabling you to view these motions at a later point. We are then
able to enhance your walking and running movements from the feedback
attained.
It is very beneficial to improve your understanding
of the way you move and how that contributes to your problem.
It is also a useful tool to quantify your improvements.
Clinical Pilates
Pilates is a specific system of exercises. It is
named after its founder Joseph Pilates who began to develop his
ideas in a World War I English prisoner of war camp while assisting
injured prisoners to recover from war induced injury. He then
moved to New York in the 1920's and set up a studio there.
|
|
In the early days his exercises
were embraced by the dance world who found them to be excellent in
terms of strengthening and performance enhancing. In the event of
an injury the Pilates exercises also maintained strength and assisted
with rehabilitation.
In more recent times physiotherapists have embraced Pilates as it
provides the specific strength and core stability needed by so many
of our clients experiencing ongoing back pain. The program includes
up to 250 exercises that focus on the use of the deep abdominal muscles,
correct breathing and good posture.
The exercises can be very gentle. For clients with
acute and sub acute pain we design a programme of exercises that
don't aggravate their pain but rather start to activate their deep
stomach and back musculature to develop strength and control around
their weakened segments. |
 |
| The exercises at the other end of the spectrum
can be designed to be very challenging with a very high level of
core stability called upon. These are excellent for elite athletes
to provide that edge over the opposition or to sharpen up slightly
weak core stabilizers.
Exercises for elite sports people have a sports specific
slant where we design exercises with the challenges of the sport
in mind.
Exercises for dance professionals and dance students
have a dance specific slant where we design exercises with the demands
of dance technique in mind. |
| We
have an onsite Pilates instructor, Alison Jepp who teaches private
pilates on a 1:1 or group basis. Please click on the link to find

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a 2000 year old ancient system. Its
aim is to balance the flow of energy within the body.
It is used to address any imbalances which may be the cause of many
physical disorders and conditions of emotional distress.
Acupuncture treats both the symptoms of the illness
and it's underlying cause.
Does it Hurt?
There may well be a sensation when the needle makes
contact with the energy, which feels like a pinch, but this only
lasts for the first few seconds at initial contact.

All of the Surrey Physiotherapists are qualified
to administer acupuncture and many use this alongside treatment
programmes, dependant upon the individual and the condition.

Reflexology
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that focuses
on the hands and feet, with the common goal of attempting to return
the body to homeostasis. (state of well being). Reflexology uses
firm thumb and or finger pressure on the specific areas of the feet
that equally correspond to the organs and glands within the patient.
Thus allowing the body to heal itself through maintaining a balance
in energy pathways and zones.
Reflexology or foot therapy has been around for many hundreds of
years. Egyptian pictographs and old texts show indian, chinese and
japanese all working on the feet to prevent or combat ailments.
Reflexology is a non invasive therapy and a session
consists of the patients remaining fully dressed and just unveiling
the feet.
Stuart Mailer is our in-house reflexologist. Should you have any
